What is Tomiki Aikido?

With Japanese origins that go back many centuries, Tomiki Aikido as practiced today includes joint locking techniques, throws, takedowns and body movements from many of the ancient fighting methods taught, used and perfected by the samurai in feudal Japan.

Tomiki Aikido is a full contact but non aggressive martial art. It is considered a "soft" art because of the lack of kicks and punches. Force is never opposed by force. Tomiki Aikido's principles are based on exploiting the weakness of an opponent. Many people are impressed by the often spectacular locks and throws executed by students and instructors alike. Training can be fast and demanding, yet the consideration for oneself and ones partner is never lost. In essence, Tomiki Aikido is turning an opponent's power against themselves and in doing this, Tomiki Aikido teaches self defence.

Police Forces, Prison Officers, Security Staff and Military Personnel all over the world are taught Aikido techniques. This is because Aikido teaches the use of simple pain compliant techniques to neutralise and restrain an attacker without causing them any long term injuries. By using the attacker's momentum, the Aikido student takes the attacker's balance, controls his force, and ultimately neutralizes the attack.

Is Tomiki Aikido for you?

Tomiki Aikido is an excellent form of both physical and mental exercise. Tomiki Aikido is ideal for people of all ages as it does not require the tremendous amount of strength required by other martial arts. In this sense, it can be a very practical martial art for women as they do not have to try and over power their attacker. If you think you may be interested in trying this martial art or if you would like some more information, simply e-mail one of the committee below or fill in our online query on our Contact Us page. We hope to hear from you soon.
